Courtyard of the Cyrillic Alphabet

The Disciples of the First Teachers of the Slavs

In front of the eastern wall, on a stone podium, stands a sculptural composition depicting the disciples of the first teachers of the Slavs.

It feels as though we have stepped into the home of the boyar Eshkach, where Clement (840–916), Naum (830–910) and Angelarius (?–c. 866) are working on the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet.

Naum is seated, writing with his quill; behind him, Angelarius appears to be explaining something to the others, while Clement stands before them with a dignified bearing, studying one of the manuscripts containing the newly created Cyrillic letters.
