There he graduated in architecture and came into contact with many of the philosophers and artists associated with German-language modernism at the beginning of the 20th century \u2013 <strong>Fichte, Husserl, Nietzsche, Rainer Maria Rilke, Arthur Schnitzler<\/strong>, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While still a student, he sent his first literary works from Vienna to Bulgaria, where they were published in various magazines, including <strong>\u201cSmyah,\u201d \u201cHudozhnik,\u201d \u201cNash Zhivot,\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cNovo Obshtestvo.\u201d<\/strong> During the <strong>Balkan Wars (1912\u20131913)<\/strong>, he returned to his homeland to serve as a volunteer in defence of its freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1914, he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Vienna, where he remained until 1922. After being recalled by the government of <strong>Alexander Tsankov<\/strong> in 1923, he returned to Sofia and devoted himself to literary and publishing activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with <strong>Ivan Radoslavov<\/strong> and <strong>Lyudmil Stoyanov<\/strong>, he was one of the editors of the magazine <strong>\u201cHyperion\u201d<\/strong>, the leading forum of Bulgarian Symbolism. Trayanov himself was one of the founders of this literary movement in Bulgaria with his poem <strong>\u201cA New Day\u201d (1905)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For seven years, he taught at the school from which he himself had graduated \u2013 the <strong>First Boys\u2019 High School<\/strong> \u2013 and translated works by <strong>Shakespeare, Schiller and Heinrich von Kleist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding his books <strong>\u201cBulgarian Ballads\u201d (1921)<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cEarth and Spirit\u201d (1921\u20131926)<\/strong>, his friend and admirer <strong>Garegin Nzhdeh<\/strong>, the Armenian general who had defended both his own homeland and Bulgarian lands against Ottoman forces, wrote in a letter to Trayanov:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIf I commanded the Bulgarian army, church and school, I would order every soldier and commander, \/\u2026\/, every pupil and teacher \u2013 every Bulgarian \u2013 to carry your ballads upon their breast \/\u2026\/ Glory to you and to the people who gave birth to you!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three women inspired the poet\u2019s muse: <strong>Elena Peters<\/strong> of Vienna, who became his wife in 1906; his great love <strong>Dora Dyustabanlieva<\/strong>, with whom he shared fourteen devoted years after returning to Bulgaria until her early death \u2013 her sister Zheni was Hristo Smirnenski\u2019s fianc\u00e9e \u2013 and <strong>Vera Balabanova<\/strong>, who brought new life to his final years as his secretary, friend and companion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Austrian writer and essayist <strong>Karl Anton, Prince of Rohan<\/strong>, described Trayanov\u2019s significance in these words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHe is a poet, a bard of European significance and European stature, whose unfamiliar language is the only obstacle on his path to fame\u2026 That unfamiliar language, spoken by barely nine million people, which rings and resounds in his poetry like an incantation to the new century!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The bust-monument of <strong>Teodor Trayanov<\/strong> was created by sculptor <strong>Krasimir Angelov<\/strong>. He is also the author of a bas-relief of <strong>Vasil Levski<\/strong> in front of the Bulgarian Embassy in Paris, a bust-monument of the Apostle of Freedom in Silistra, the <strong>Monument to Freedom in Botevgrad<\/strong>, and other sculptural compositions throughout Bulgaria.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>On 11 May 2017, an imposing sculpture of the Bulgarian ruler <strong>Tsar Simeon the Great<\/strong> was unveiled at the Tsar Simeon the Great Private School in Sofia.
