And Vladimir Vysotsky is the soul of Russian poetry \u2013 a soul that sings, sometimes sadly, sometimes joyfully, but always sincerely.<\/strong>\u201d With these words, Academician <strong>Grigory Pototsky<\/strong>, creator of Vysotsky\u2019s bust-monument in the Writers\u2019 Alley, began his speech at its unveiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He spoke with admiration of the artist\u2019s extraordinary personality \u2013 a poet, prose writer, stage and film actor, and screenwriter who spoke and sang with the voice of the Russian people during some of their most difficult years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Moscow into the family of a veteran of the <strong>Great Patriotic War<\/strong>, Vysotsky himself had no memories of the war, yet his songs about it \u2013 <strong>\u201cPenal Battalions,\u201d \u201cSong of the Stars,\u201d \u201cEveryone Went to the Front,\u201d \u201cMass Graves,\u201d \u201cHe Did Not Return from Battle,\u201d \u201cThe Letter\u201d<\/strong> and others \u2013 created an enduring memory of the Russian soldiers who fought in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His theatrical education at the <strong>Moscow Art Theatre School<\/strong>, from which he graduated in 1960, gave the restless actor the opportunity to embody many different figures from history and contemporary life, while travelling throughout his country and getting to know its people. Their joys and sorrows inspired the words of more than <strong>800 songs<\/strong>. Some were heard in stage productions and films, others survived in private archival recordings, while many were suppressed by the censorship of the authorities because of their sharply critical language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only after Vysotsky\u2019s death did the great Russian poet <strong>Robert Rozhdestvensky<\/strong> manage to collect and publish some of his emblematic works in the book <strong>\u201cNerve\u201d (1981)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A national survey ranked <strong>\u201cSong of a Friend,\u201d \u201cThe Rock Climber,\u201d \u201cMorning Exercise\u201d<\/strong> and others among his most popular songs, while <strong>\u201cFastidious Horses\u201d<\/strong> came to be regarded as one of Vysotsky\u2019s signature works. In 1984, it also inspired the monument at his grave, created by <strong>Alexander Rukavishnikov<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vysotsky also left several works of prose, including <strong>\u201cDolphins and Psychos\u201d<\/strong> (written in 1968, published in 1989) and <strong>\u201cA Novel About Girls\u201d<\/strong> (written in 1977, published in 1988). Together with <strong>Leonid Monchinsky<\/strong>, he was also a co-author of the novel <strong>\u201cThe Black Candle\u201d (1992)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His work gained a wide international following. His writings have been included in literature textbooks in the <strong>Czech Republic and Israel<\/strong>, and in 2009 a textbook by <strong>R. Jones<\/strong>, <strong>\u201cUsing the Music of Vladimir Vysotsky in Teaching the Russian Language,\u201d<\/strong> was published in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Death overtook the poet and singer at the age of only <strong>42<\/strong>, during the <strong>1980 Olympic Games in Moscow<\/strong>. The authorities attempted to keep news of his death quiet, yet some <strong>40,000 people<\/strong> joined the funeral procession, which stretched for around 10 kilometres through the streets of the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was perhaps the greatest testimony to the significance of a man who, despite all of life\u2019s trials, sang of his love for life with the words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI will never grow tired of being alive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The bust was created by <strong>Grigory Pototsky<\/strong>, the internationally renowned Russian sculptor, founder and president of the <strong>International Academy of Kindness<\/strong>, and creator of the monuments to <strong>General Gurko<\/strong> and the <strong>Mother of God in Sofia<\/strong>, for which he received the <strong>Golden Muse Award<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>More than 140 of his works serve as ambassadors of his philosophy of <strong>Kindness<\/strong> in 40 countries around the world.
