I too shall fly into the misty veil,
and with a bird\u2019s voice call down to the earth
the beloved names of those still living.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The author of one of the most popular songs in Russia, \u201cCranes\u201d<\/em>, was born into the family of the renowned Avar poet Gamzat Tsadasa in the Khunzakh district of Dagestan. Rasul\u2019s first works were published when he was only nine years old. At sixteen, he graduated from the Avar Pedagogical School, and by seventeen he was already working as a teacher. After 1941, he worked as an assistant director and journalist, and in 1950 graduated from the Maxim Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow. A public figure, politician and ambassador of literature to African and Asian countries, he was above all the great poet of Dagestan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rasul Gamzatov wrote in his native language, and his works have been translated into almost all major languages of the world. He himself translated Pushkin, Lermontov, Yesenin and Mayakovsky into Avar. Many of his poems became songs, set to music by composers such as Yan Frenkel, Raimonds Pauls and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rasul Gamzatov\u2019s most personal confession is his book \u201cMy Dagestan\u201d<\/em> \u2013 a story about the life and people of his homeland and about the extraordinary language in which his soul sings. He was therefore awarded the title of \u201cPeople\u2019s Poet of Dagestan.\u201d Gamzatov received numerous awards in Russia and abroad for his literary work. His honours include the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called for his contribution to the development of national literature and his public activities, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, and the international award \u201cBest Poet of the 20th Century.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fate also brought him to Bulgaria. He fell in love with the Rhodope Mountains, which reminded him of the mountains of his native land. He was made an honorary citizen of Smolyan, awarded the Order of Cyril and Methodius, and became a laureate of the Hristo Botev International Prize, an honour of which he spoke with great emotion. Rasul Gamzatov expressed his affection for the Bulgarian land and its people in poetry. One of his poems dedicated to Bulgaria is \u201cAn Example of Greatness\u201d<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bulgaria is small in land,<\/strong><\/em>
but wholly filled with kindly hearts;<\/strong><\/em>
received with so much love, how could<\/strong><\/em>
one ever wish the time to part?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever house I enter there,<\/strong><\/em>
although the rooms may differ so,<\/strong><\/em>
I know that friends will greet me everywhere,<\/strong><\/em>
and sacred customs I respect and know.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A guest should never hurry home \u2013<\/strong><\/em>
a man from the Caucasus like me will understand.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A guest I am, yet feel as though at home;<\/strong><\/em>
I wonder if you understand my admiration\u2026<\/strong><\/em>
Bulgaria is small in land,<\/strong><\/em>
but boundless in its virtues.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After so many years she still remembers<\/strong><\/em>
the soldiers who in battle died for her;<\/strong><\/em>
with reverence I read their names<\/strong><\/em>
upon the monuments to battles long gone by.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And once again my thoughts return<\/strong><\/em>
to Shipka, hidden in the ancient Balkan\u2026<\/strong><\/em>
Bulgaria is small in land,<\/strong><\/em>
but Bulgaria I never shall forget.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this supposedly small country<\/strong><\/em>
did not for even one brief moment tremble before threats\u2026<\/strong><\/em>
The Balkan Mountains are close to me,<\/strong><\/em>
and so is this wondrous Valley of Roses!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love the Yantra; long I listened<\/strong><\/em>
to the Maritsa sending me its gentle songs;<\/strong><\/em>
from the Danube to the southern border<\/strong><\/em>
warm-hearted kindness waits for you.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the charm of a young and beautiful maiden,<\/strong><\/em>
having passed through every trial with distinction,<\/strong><\/em>
though Bulgaria may be small in land,<\/strong><\/em>
it is an example of greatness.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The author of the bust monument to Rasul Gamzatov is People\u2019s Artist of Dagestan and Russia Geybat Geybatov (Gimbat Gimbatov). He is the creator of more than 80 monumental works in the capital Makhachkala and in other cities and settlements throughout the republic. For his participation in international, Russian and republican exhibitions, he has received numerous medals, diplomas and certificates of honour.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a laureate of the Republican Prizes named after the renowned Avar poet Gamzat Tsadasa and Halil-Bek Musayasul, as well as the State Prize of the Republic of Dagestan. He has also received the honorary titles \u201cPeople\u2019s Artist of the Dagestan ASSR\u201d and \u201cPeople\u2019s Artist of the Russian Federation,\u201d among others. His museum collection includes portraits of Rasul Gamzatov, Tagir Khuryugsky and the sculptor H. B. Askar-Sarydzha, as well as works of small-scale sculpture.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
