Victory over the Magyars

The Bulgarians once again sought Boris-Michael’s help because of the raids by the Magyars from the north, which further complicated the already difficult war with Byzantium (894–896).

Boris-Michael instructed them to fast for three days, repent and offer sincere prayers to God for help. When the battle began, the entire army was filled with the fervour of faith. The fighting was fierce, but with the power of the Cross, the Bulgarians succeeded in driving back the invaders.

This was the only military victory of Tsar Boris, achieved while he was a monk – with the sword, with words, and with unwavering faith in God’s help.

For the next ten years, he devoted himself to “vigil and prayer.” He departed this world on 2 May 907, and the Bulgarian Church immediately proclaimed him a saint.
