Becoming a Monk

In 889, Tsar Boris abdicated the throne and became a monk in a monastery near Pliska, taking the name Michael, which he had received at his baptism.

Historical sources differ as to the reasons behind his decision. Some suggest that it reflected the Tsar’s desire for spiritual growth, while others maintain that a serious illness forced him “to entrust his soul to God and the kingdom to his firstborn son.”
